Stargate Atlantis cancelled, Stargate franchise to continue

The Sci Fi Channel has decided that Stargate Atlantis‘ fifth season (currently airing in the US and Canada) will be its last. However, this does not mean the end of the Stargate franchise, as we have not only an Atlantis TV-movie (with more to follow if successful) to look forward to, but a brand new show, dubbed Stargate Universe, to premiere in 2009.

Universe, which will try to attract a new generation of viewers to Stargate, will be set primarily in space aboard spaceship “Destiny”, whose crew will travel throughout the galaxy in an effort to discover new life, new civilization, to boldy go where no man has gone before… Mmmh, sound familiar? Sci Fi honcho Dave Howe had this to say:

“This is an opportunity to reinvent this franchise and make it relevant to a new generation. We really don’t want to be more of the same. It’s going to build clearly off the existing franchise but with a cast that gives it a younger vibe.”

No one has been cast yet, but producers are reportedly looking for a well-known face in the lead, accompanied by a number of relative newcomers. One of the biggest and most recent science-fiction franchises, Stargate was initiated by the 1994 Roland Emmerich film of the same name. TV show Stargate SG-1 followed in 1997 and ran for ten seasons making it the longest running United States science-fiction series. SG-1 was followed by two highly successful TV-movies, with a third to follow. Atlantis was launched in 2004 and there was also a short lived animated series on FOX, Stargate Infinity. In addition, the franchise includes books, comics, original audiobooks and an RPG.

I never really got into Stargate myself. I don’t remember the movie that well and saw bits of SG-1, but it seems like the kind of universe I’d enjoy, some I’m glad it’s moving on.

  1. The first Stargate show had some fun episodes, but that was about it. I’ll give pretty much any genre show a shot so Universe will get a few episodes outta me.
