Directed by Rituparno Ghosh (Chokher Bali), The Last Lear is an English-language Indian movie based on a play by Utpal Dutt.
Amitabh Bachchan, a screen legend in India who’s acted in nearly 200 films, stars as aging Shakespearean actor Harish Mishra who agrees to star in a film, with disastrous consequences to his health. The story is told through flashbacks, while Harish is in a coma. Co-starring with Bachchan are Arjun Rampal (Om Shanti Om) as Siddarth, the movie’s director, and the cute erstwhile Bollywood superstar Preity Zinta (Jhoom Barabar Jhoom) as Shabnam, a bad actress whom Harish mentors.
The Last Lear premiered at the 2007 Toronto International Film Festival to wide acclaim and is set for worldwide release on September 12th 2008. From the looks of this trailer, I know I’ll be there.
