New Trailer: Madagascar – Escape 2 Africa

The third and presumably final trailer for Madagascar 2 has popped up and it gives a lot more insight than the previous two. I wasn’t a big fan of the first Madagascar (I actually thought it sucked), but this looks potentially better, and though it’ll undoubtedly be incredibly stupid, there may be a few decent laughs.

Co-directed by original helmers Eric Darnell and Tom McGrath and written by Etan Cohen (Tropic Thunder), the sequel, whose title can be read as Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa or Madagascar 2: Escape Africa, has the four New York Zoo animals from the first film attempting to return to their home on a plane piloted by penguins only to crash in continental Africa.

In typical DreamWorks Animation fashion, the film features the voice talents of many notable people including Ben Stiller (Tropic Thunder), Chris Rock (I Think I Love My Wife), Jada Pinkett Smith (The Women), David Schwimmer (Friends), Sacha Baron Cohen (Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street), Cedric The Entertainer (Street Kings), Bernie Mac (Transformers), Will.i.am (the band Black Eyed Peas) and Andy Richter (Semi-Pro), and will premiere on November 6th in Hungary and Russia (???). Will you go see it?

New Moby Dick to become a special effects bonanza

Universal Pictures is planning yet another adaptation of Herman Melville’s classic 1851 novel Moby Dick, and are looking to take it the brainless summer blockbuster route with Russian-Kazakh director Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted) at the helm. What’s more, the story will be modernized and robbed of its point.

Gone is the first-person narration by the young seaman Ishmael, who observes how Ahab’s obsession with killing the great white whale overwhelms his good judgment as captain.

This change will allow them to depict the whale’s decimation of other ships prior to its encounter with Ahab’s Pequod, and Ahab will be depicted more as a charismatic leader than a brooding obsessive.

The screenwriting duo responsible for this rape are the illustrious Adam Cooper & Bill Collage (Accepted). Meanwhile, Melville is rolling over in his grave and Michael Bay (Transformers) is wondering whether they’ll finally let him film John Steinbeck’s East Of Eden the way it was “meant to be seen”. No word on whether noted whale lover Hayden Panettiere (NBC’s Heroes) is already boycotiing the film.

Fun Fact: Techno musician Moby is in fact Herman Melville’s great-great-great-grandnephew.

Movie Of The Day: The Abandoned (2006)

A true example of cross-culture cinema, The Abandoned is an English-language Spanish film set in Russia, starring British actress Anastasia Hille (The Hole) and Czech actor Karel Roden (RocknRolla) in the lead roles. It marks the feature debut for director Nacho Cerdà, who co-wrote the film with the Canadian Karim Hussain (Subconscious Cruelty) and the South African Richard Stanley (The Island Of Dr. Moreau).

The movie follows Marie, an American film producer who arrives in Russia to learn more about her roots. There, a notary insists that she should go visit her old, decrepit family house in the middle of nowhere which she naturally does. Once there, she starts seeing strange things and eventually encouters Nikolai, her twin brother whe didn’t know about. Slowly, it becomes apparent that they’ll never manage to leave the island on which the evidently haunted house is built. Trailer and review after jump. Continue reading
