As if the first two times weren’t enough, a third Big Momma’s House has been confirmed to being on the fast-track. Now I haven’t seen either of the previous films, which tell of an FBI agent played by Martin Lawrence (College Road Trip) who goes undercover disguised as a fat black woman in order to capture criminals, but the first one is supposedly bad and the second one is widely viewed as one of the worst films of all time. So why make a third? Well, they do make money and that’s what counts. The real question though, is what is it with African American “funnymen” and dressing up as fat black women? Martin, Eddie Murphy, Tyler Perry,… they all do it!
The new movie from the incredibly prolific and successful Tyler Perry (The Family That Preys), produced, written, directed, and acted by the man himself and based on his own play, Madea Goes To Jail also stars Derek Luke (Miracle At St. Anna) and Sofía Vergara (Meet The Browns). I’ve seen none of Mr Perry’s movies because, well, they just don’t get released over here, but this looks like it could be amusing. The film will premiere in the US on February 20th.
Four movies opened wide in the US last Friday, and all four of them went on to make decent money during the oh-so-critical weekend, ending a seven-week long box-office slump. Burn After Reading, the latest from the acclaimed Coen brothers Ethan and Joel (No Country For Old Men) took the top spot, followed by The Family That Preys, the latest from the incredibly prolific and popular Tyler Perry (Meet The Browns) who apparently made his best film yet…why don’t his films get released overseas? Finishing up the top 5 are the thriller Righteous Kill, the chick flick The Women and the apparently actually good The House Bunny, which is holding up very well in its fourth week of release. Last week’s number one however, Bangkok Dangerous, tumbled down to eighth place.
