Tobey Maguire gets an “unprecedented deal” to web-sling again

As you now know, Spider-Man 4 and 5 are now fully underway, filming back-to-back with the original team. Now word of lead Tobey Maguire’s salary has come out, and even if you consider it’s for two movies, 50 million dollars is still huge. That and the fact he is guaranteed a special schedule to spend time with his daughter.

Maguire was willing to shoot Spider-Man 4 and 5 back-to-back over six months next year but insisted he should take early mornings and evenings off so he could play with his “favourite blonde”, Ruby Sweetheart, who is 22 months old.

In a strange turn of events, the late Steve McQueen’s (The Great Escape) wife Barbara was asked for a comment and basically called Maguire a pussy, saying she couldn’t imagine her husband demanding “family time”.

Y: The Last Man to be a Warner Bros movie (duh)

With his latest thriller, Eagle Eye, premiering in some countries next week, suddenly hotshot director D.J. Caruso (Disturbia) is already hard at work on his next project, an adaptation of Brian K. Vaughan’s comic book series Y: The Last Man. The script, written by Disturbia scribe Carl Ellsworth, was submitted to Warner Bros last week, which some insist is big news but actually isn’t at all since Y: The Last Man is a DC/Vertigo series, and thus belongs to Time Warner.

According to Wikipedia, Y: The Last Man is “about the only man to survive the mysterious simultaneous death of every male mammal on Earth”. Planned for 2010, the film will unite Caruso and star Shia LaBeouf for the third time. Caruso is reportedly considering Alicia Keys (The Nanny Diaries) for the part of the hero’s “protector”, 355 and has stated that the hero’s pet monkey will be real, not CGI. Y: The Last Man will be the first part of what is hoped to be a trilogy and will adapt the comic’s first 14 issues.

Eva Longoria for Wasp?

Overrated beauty Eva Longoria (ABC’s Desperate Housewives) has recently visited Marvel Studios’ offices, leaving with a bunch of comic books and a business card, and apparently many believe she’s in talks to play Wasp/Janet Van Dyne in the forthcoming Avengers movie planned for 2011 and set up by various other comic book films such as Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk.

Wasp is one of the first Avengers and a character I’ve surprisingly absolutely never heard of before. According to Wikipedia, Wasp’s abilities include size manipulation, flight, bio-electric energy blasts and telepathic insect control… Eva Longoria is certainly sexy enough (at least with makeup on) but what do you think? Are you looking forward to Eva floating like a butterfly, stinging like a bee?

Iron Man 2 in IMAX 3D?

Iron Man director Jon Favreau wants to follow in The Dark Knight‘s footsteps and shoot part of the sequel with IMAX cameras. As you may or may not know, IMAX screens are much more square-shaped than “normal” ones, with an aspect ratio of 143/100 as compared to 185/100 which is the standard for most films these days.

I wasn’t lucky enough to catch The Dark Knight in IMAX but a lot of people who did insist it is truly amazing to behold. From what I understand, the image would expand for certain scenes, offering the viewer a greater immersion into the film. Once again I haven’t experienced it, so I can’t really comment, but if it is as good as they say, then awesome I guess.

Additionally, Favreau says he’d love for Iron Man 2 to go 3D, which I really don’t think is a good idea. I’m strongly opposed to the idea that 3D is the future of cinema. I enjoy 3D films when they come out, but I am a firm believer than 2D is capable of drawing in the viewer much better than 3D, strangely enough.

Fun Stuff: Which Marvel hero are you?

Ever wondered which Marvel hero you were most like? Well, now’s your lucky day thanks to this great quiz from Liquid Generation. With 26 possible outcomes, you’ll be able to find out whether you’re more of a wisecracking Spider-Man or a badass Wolverine. All I can say is, where’s the DC version?

Personally, my result is Hulk, which is surprisingly fitting…in other words, you wouldn’t like me when I’m angry. What Marvel character did you turn out to be?

Thor gets a director?

Well, not exactly yet, but new hotshot director D.J. Caruso (Disturbia) is in talks with Marvel Studios to helm the forthcoming 2010 Norse God movie.

There’s a fear I have about Thor and depending on what Thor story you want to tell, whether you want to bring Thor into the modern world or if you want to go back to Asgard and get the history of what’s happening between him and his brother and dad. That’s one I’ve always been interested in and it also would be, it would be a monumental task so, I could definitely see myself getting myself into that… I have had some talks with Marvel about it but I have not seen a screenplay. It could be something that I am interested in.

Thor has to be one of the forefront Marvel characters I’m least familiar with, but I’m of course excited at the prospect of the film and Caruso could be an interesting choice. Caruso’s next thriller Eagle Eye debuts late September in America and Australia.

Fox wants more X-Men spinoffs (yes!) and a Daredevil reboot (why?)

With X-Men Origins: Wolverine, the X-Men prequel, to be released by next May, and X-Men Origins: Magneto (another prequel) to follow soon after, 20th Century-Fox have decided they have a gold mine and are planning at least two more spinoffs: a “Young X-Men” movie (Generation X?) and a film focusing on the high-tech mercenary Deadpool, whom Ryan Reynolds (Definitely, Maybe) plays in Wolverine. I say go for it, as long as you keep the films consistent with one another.

Additionally, Fox is considering a reboot of the Daredevil franchise, which spawned a 2003 film starring Ben Affleck (Hollywoodland) as the titular hero and the 2005 spinoff clunker Elektra, and wall I can say is why? Why can’t we simply have a Daredevil 2? The first film isn’t anywhere near the failure most people seem to think it is. Exceeding its budget by 100 million dollars worldwide, it was well received by many, and even some people who hated it loved the director’s cut which adds 30 minutes to the film, including an entire subplot. Hell, I even know quite a few people who prefer it to Spider-Man! Why must there be a reboot? Blame Christopher Nolan. Not long ago, Jason Statham (Death Race) expressed interest in taking the role, with long time Daredevil writer Frank Miller’s support. I like Jason, but that’s just a bad choice.

So, what exactly IS going on with those Ninja Turtles?

About a week ago, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles co-creator Kevin Eastman stated the possibility of a new live action movie that would reboot the franchise on the big screen, despite TMNT‘s success. Just a few days later, current comic book writer Stephen Murphy called the story complete bull (more on that here). Now Peter Laird, the other co-creator chimes in to say that yes a new film is in the works, yes it’d be cool if Steve Barron, the first film’s director, came back and yes it will be live action, sort of.

The turtles themselves, and some of the villains (hopefully not Shredder) will be computer generated in the proposed film, while the locations and human characters will be real. Kind of like Garfield, or Scooby-Doo, get it? So there you have it, sound like it could potentially be awesome to me. Everyone’s favorite pizza-loving turtles deserve a comeback!

Original team back for Spider-Man 4 and 5!!! Also, Venom news

It’s official, director Sam Raimi and lead actor Tobey Maguire will return for the next two Spider-Man movies, which may even shoot back-to-back! Kirsten Dunst, who plays the hero’s love interest Mary Jane Watson, is not locked in but she’s expected to return as well (it’s not like she has anything else going on right now). Earlier this week, Bryce Dallas Howard expressed interest in returning as Gwen Stacy, the competing love interest she played in Spider-Man 3 (more on that here). My advice, kill off Kirsten in the opening credits, continue with Bryce.

As for the villain, though it hasn’t been officially announced, most people believe it will be The Lizard, as his human persona was featured in the two previous movies (played by Dylan Bakers).  But then again, most people thought The Lizard would be the third movie’s villain. James Vanderbilt (Zodiac) has been writing the films, the first of which will come out in May 2011.

In related news, a Venom spin-off is still planned, and Topher Grace, the actor who portrayed him in Spider-Man 3, will most likely star despite previous reports to the contrary. It is unknown as to when a Venom movie can be expected. Also, what would Venom do on his own?

Finally, that Spider-Man 4 auction ended at a whooping 28100 dollars. Don’t know what I’m talking about? Read this.
